Best Time to Visit Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu: Which Park Is Best Right Now
Published 2026-10-30 · 6 min read

If you search "best time to visit Minneriya", you will find different answers for different parks. That's because the elephants don't stay in one place. They move between three areas, Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park, following water and fresh grass. Once you understand that, choosing the right park and month is simple.

Why do elephants move between the parks? (Minneriya elephant gathering season)
Minneriya and Kaudulla are built around two ancient reservoirs ("tanks"). Elephants visit them for one reason: water and food, and what they need changes through the year.
Rainy months (about November to April): Rain fills small ponds and streams all over the forest. The two big tanks are full, so the shoreline is under water. Elephants have plenty to drink everywhere, so they spread out through the forest and there is no reason to come to the tanks.
Dry months (about May to October): Small water sources dry up. As the big tanks slowly shrink, fresh green grass grows on the exposed shore. Now the tank is the best place for both water and food, and herds walk long distances to reach it. This is the famous Minneriya Gathering.
Late dry season to early rains: As Minneriya's water level falls, many herds move on to Kaudulla, which stays attractive for longer. When rain returns, the elephants spread out again, and some herds move toward Hurulu Eco Park, where you can still see elephants when the tanks are not at their best.

Nature changes from year to year, so use this as a guide, not a promise. Sightings are never guaranteed, and a dry year or a wet year can move the dates by a few weeks.

Tips for a Habarana elephant safari in any park
- Choose an afternoon safari. Herds come to the water as the day cools, and the light is better for photos.
- Book early in August and September. Jeeps and rooms in Habarana fill up in peak season.
- Wear neutral colours and bring a hat, water and binoculars.
- Check the entrance fee before you go. Our Minneriya entrance fee guide shows the full cost with a calculator.
- Stay flexible. A good operator will switch parks if the herds have moved.

Best time to visit FAQ
What is the best time to visit Minneriya for the elephant gathering?
July to October, with August and September as the peak.
What is the best time to visit Kaudulla, and is it better than Minneriya?
It depends on the month. Kaudulla usually has fewer jeeps, and it often gets better later in the season when Minneriya's water level drops.
What is the best time to visit Hurulu Eco Park, and can I see elephants outside the gathering season?
Yes, but in smaller numbers. Hurulu Eco Park and Kaudulla are often the best options at those times.
Why are there no elephants at the tank in the rainy season?
The tank is full and small water sources are available everywhere, so the elephants stay in the forest.
Are elephant sightings guaranteed?
No. These are wild animals, and we always say so honestly. Choosing the right park and time raises your chances.
